About Us

Present tense is a place for writers, thinkers, & tinkerers alike. We are a co-working space and a creative community for exploration & encounter; using poetry as a linchpin to explore meaning-making across mediums, ideas & practices, our goal is to facilitate an environment for self-understanding and, in turn, creativity & transformation.

Mission

Present Tense envisions a world where poetics is a practice that transcends disciplines, where the affordances of poetry are applied to creating anything — even one's own life.

Areas Of Focus

Poetry & Poetics

As a medium for exploration, transformation, and creative freedom.

Community & Co-Creation

Building a living work-space for individual inquiry and process.

Teaching & Learning

Hosting workshops, residencies, and ongoing learning experiences.

Publishing & Documentation

Making space for slow publishing, process-sharing, and poetic research.

Mindfulness & Presence

Cultivating awareness through writing, reading, and collective attunement practices.

Present Tense carries meaning for us both as a literary term & a reminder that practice happens in present awareness.

Vision

We stand as a counterpoint to the linear paradigms of output & utility that dominate our culture. We provide space & community for those who want to explore life beyond those frameworks. Those whose bodies are inseparable from their work, whose sensibilities blend logic with mystery, & those seeking to reconnect expression with the body & its energies.

We are a space encouraging our community to be well, firm in the belief that care for the self is an act of stewardship for our bodies & the wider worlds they inhabit. We believe in the creative act as a primary tool for living an engaged life.
