Applied Poetics: RAP (Rhythm And Poetry)

15:00 - 17:00
Rap is poetry; shaped by rhythm, repetition, storytelling and an acute attention to the possibilities of language.
Applied Poetics: Rhythm and Poetry is a workshop exploring Rap as a literary and poetic practice. Moving between songs and poems, we’ll examine the techniques that gives rap its particular force:
How can rhythm alter meaning?
How can language be stretched and re-structured?
What happens to our writing when we begin with the voice?
Through collective listening, reading, discussion and practical exercises, participants will be encouraged to bring these ideas into their own work. Rather than treating Rap as something separate from poetry, this workshop asks what becomes possible when we traverse the bridge between the two, and how the linguistic, rhythmic and structural innovations of Rap might expand our own poetic practices.
No previous experience with rap or poetry is necessary.
Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to listen differently.
Session facilitated by Moonchile.
