HALIMATU: Reading for families

Reading, Making

10:00-11:30 am

Presented by Clara Dublanc

Join us for a reading of Halimatu, a children’s book inspired by true stories from fishing communities in The Gambia. It is a story of courage, kinship, and the fight to protect the ocean that sustains life along the coast.

Told through the eyes of women fish sellers, those most affected by these changes, Halimatu speaks to young people about the impact of extractive fishing practices and the power of communities standing together.

As fishmeal and fish oil factories arrive and take vast amounts of local fish to supply the global animal farming industry, the rhythm of coastal life changes dramatically. Fish prices rise. The sea grows empty. Some attempt the dangerous “back way,” migration routes made ever more perilous by European border controls.

Following the reading, families are invited to take part in a workshop exploring how we can use our bodies as measuring tools, tracing, stretching, and sensing scale as a way of connecting to the natural world.
